I was released from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville on 11-3-09 with the diagnosis of Osteoporosis. I am a 35 yr. old female with chronic lung disease which requires prednisone. My question is, Will steroid use cause my bones to worsen if the correct Osteoporosis drug therapy is given? Will yoga slow down the progression of this disease? I am a single active mother and scared of this diagnosis any input would be appreciated. Thank you, Brandi Mason
The following is a reply from Dr. Khosla:
Patients on steroids are at particularly high risk for bone loss and fractures. Fortunately, a number of drugs (bisphosphonates, teriparatide) have now been shown to be effective in preventing (or reversing, in the case of teriparatide) bone loss associated with steroid use. Thus, close follow up of bone density and medications to prevent bone loss are very important. The good news is that these measures are very effective in preventing fractures in patients such as yourself.
Thank you so much, as I needed some good news!!

I am 51, vegetarian, and small boned. I was told 2 years ago that my bone-density showed bone-loss. I just had another bone-density and it showed more bone-loss. What can I do to stop this bone-loss please?
The following is a reply from Dr. Khosla:
In this situation, it is very important to ensure adequate vitamin D (around 800 IU/day) and calcium (1200-1500 mg/day) intake. In addition, keeping alcohol intake to less than 1 drink/day, weight bearing exercises (eg, walking, stair climbing), and not smoking are also important. Bone density should be checked in follow up, and if there is significant, ongoing bone loss over time that is not being prevented by these measures, then medications such as Evista or a bisphosphonate can be used. One has to be careful, however, that the degree of change in the DXA bone density measurement is beyond the error or “noise” in the measurement.
If a person has been on Forteo for two years and their Osteoporosis was better, what drug should they try next if Actonel or Boniva has not helped in the past? I’ve only heard of ReClast and Prolia, but wanted to know what you think.
