Would you please comment on the effect Amyloidosis has on the heart, and what the person who has the disease can maintain adequate function as long as possible.

Dr. Grogan says “Amyloidosis: It is a condition that develops when abnormal proteins deposit in the heart and make it stiffer than it should be. Treatment and prognosis depend completely on what type of amyloid is present. AL amyloidosis is rare and usually occurs in individuals aged 40-60. Senile amyloidosis is more common and usually occurs in men over age 60. A third form is familial amyloidosis. An individual with amyloidosis is best treated at a center with expertise in this area. While it is always important to be as active as possible with any heart condition, patients with cardiac amyloidosis are often limited in their ability to exercise, especially those with AL amyloid which usually progresses rapidly. Those with senile amyloid may do well for many years.”
